Fishing is the general that is used to refer to the activity of catching fish. The term could also be applied to catching any other aquatic animals like shellfish, crustaceans, cephalopods and echinoderms. However, the term is not commonly used in the activity of catching aquatic mammals like whales, where whaling would be the more appropriate term to use.
